The list of names in the background is a shortened list of Americans who were killed. The unabridged list is much much much longer. The point is their last moments in this world were spent fighting for air. It’s sad to think that skin color defines people’s fate.

Black people are killed by police in this country in disproportionate numbers. Police killed 1,099 people in 2019; nearly one-quarter were black although they make up only 13 percent of the population. Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than whites. There are multiple commonalities between these incidents. White people — chiefly police officers — killing Black people. If you are not outraged at the treatment of black Americans and the death of those who have so wrongly lost their lives at the hands of racism, then you are part of the problem. We must recognize the power our privilege contains. That power can be used to aid our marginalized Americans or it can be abused and cause our discriminated peers unimaginable harm. We must help the Black community resist the oppression it has been subjected to for 500 years. Tensions are high, compounded by the coronavirus pandemic which strikes black communities in greater numbers. Understanding is needed before change can happen.
